    History of Otay Ranch

Originally a land grant, Otay Ranch was an important area for sheep operations moving between Mexico and California during the 1800s. Later, Otay Ranch would eventually be owned and operated by Stephen Birch, a mining engineer and the visionary behind the Alaska Copper and Coal Company. From 1920 until the mid-1980s, Birch and his family ran the ranch, which harvested bean, barley, grains, and any other crops that the San Diego climate permitted. Many Southern California locals, including women, and immigrant workers from Mexico found employment on Otay Ranch during this time.

By the 1960s and 1970’s, large corporations and their shareholders began selling parts of the land due to the expansion of local cities. After the death of the last Birch family owner, Mary Birch Patrick, The Baldwin Company purchased the remaining acres of Otay Ranch for new housing developments, which are still being built upon today.
